Skin Treatments for Acne Breakouts

Every case of acne is different and can range from mild to severe. The type of skin treatment you opt for usually depends on the severity of your condition.

There are three types of drugs that have been proven to be effective for the treatment of acne and most patients require at least one or two agents, depending on the severity of their case.

Benzoyl Peroxide

This topical medication is suitable for mild cases of acne and works by targeting surface bacteria, which can often aggravate your condition and cause breakouts.

Retinoids

This acne treatment is made from vitamin A derivatives and can treat the first lesions of acne including:

  • Blackheads
  • Whiteheads
  • Raised red spots (papules)

It works well for patients with moderate acne.

Antibiotics

For more severe cases of acne, your skin care expert may recommend antibiotics as a treatment method.

They can be applied topically to the skin or taken orally and work by controlling surface bacteria and reducing any inflammation in the skin.

** This skin treatment is reserved for the most severe cases of acne that don’t respond well to other medications **

Skin Treatments for Acne Scars

If you have had severe acne, you may experience some scarring. Some of the most typical acne scars include:

  • Ice Pick Scars - Deep, but small pits
  • Boxcar Scars - These scars can be shallow or deep and usually have sharp angles/edges
  • Rolling Scars - Rolling scars tend to be wide and shallow and are caused by damage beneath the skin

Reclaim Your Beautiful, Healthy Glow!

There are different types of treatments available for acne scars. Your skin care expert can examine your case and suggest a treatment plan depending on the type of damage to your skin, and how severe it is.

Some of these skin treatments include:

1. Chemical Peels

During a chemical peel, a special type of acid removes the damaged top layer of your skin, to reveal smooth, healthy and new skin below. This can help with deeper acne scars. (Learn More >)

2. Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is the process during which a spinning wheel gently and effectively removes any damaged skin for a smoother and more consistent complexion. (Learn More >)

3. Fraxel Laser

Fraxel laser skin treatment is a pain-free and innovative method of rejuvenating your appearance, firming and plumping up the skin, while minimizing any acne scars you may have. (Learn More >)

4. Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injected into the damaged area with an ultra-fine needle. This will puff up the skin under the scar and help smooth it out. Repeat treatments will be required. (Learn More >)

5. Microneedling

Your skin care specialist will roll a device covered in tiny needles over your skin. This is a safe and effective way of stimulating the tissue underneath it to grow. (Learn More >)
