How To Prepare For Your Laser Hair Removal Procedure

In order to ensure that you receive the best possible outcome from your laser hair removal procedure, here is a step-by-step guideline on how to fully prepare for your skin treatment.

1. Schedule a Consultation

As with all skin treatments, it is crucial to schedule a personalized consultation with a skin care specialist before deciding on laser hair removal.

This consultation will include topics such as:

  • How the laser hair removal procedure works
  • Are there any side-effects associated with the skin treatment
  • Your medical history
  • Whether you are a good candidate depending on your hair and skin color

At our Kelowna skin clinic, we use the in-depth consultation to create a customized laser hair removal treatment for your specific concerns and aesthetic goals, ensuring safe and optimum results.

2. Patch Test

Before you start a full course of laser hair removal treatments, a small patch test should be done in the potential treatment area.

This is extremely important as it will:

  • Determine the intensity of laser energy required to achieve optimum results
  • Reveal any side-effects of problems that could arise from the skin treatment

The main aim of a patch test is to fine tune the laser to your specific treatment requirements, minimizing any chance of side effects occurring and maximizing the effectiveness of your results.

3. Skin Preparation

Taking the recommended preparation steps to laser hair removal is necessary for your safety and to facilitate a hassle-free skin treatment with great results.

Here is a basic guideline on how to prepare for your laser hair removal treatment:

5-6 WEEKS BEFORE TREATMENT
  • Stop all shaving, waxing, tweezing and electrolysis at least a month before your laser hair removal treatment
  • Avoid sun exposure as much as you can. Sunburns can affect your results as reddened skin will change how the laser interacts with the skin and hair follicle
  • Avoid tanning products (at least 6 weeks before) such as bronzing lotions, sunbeds, fake tan sprays and creams as they could negatively impact your hair removal results
  • Do not bleach your hair
24 HOURS BEFORE TREATMENT
  • Within 24 hours of the skin treatment, it’s recommended that the treatment area be shaved of all existing hair. This will shorten the treatment time and means less discomfort during the laser hair removal process
  • Stop using moisturizing cream the day before your skin treatment
  • If you are treating the hair of your underarms, avoid using deodorant for 1-2 days before the laser hair removal procedure
DAY OF TREATMENT
  • When you arrive for your hair removal appointment, make sure you are shaved and cleaned.
  • Avoid using products such as lotion, perfume and makeup on this day as they may interfere with the laser’s effectiveness
  • For patients with a low pain tolerance, you can take a mild oral painkiller such as tylenol 15-20 minutes before the treatment

4. Laser Hair Removal Aftercare

Aftercare is just as important as preparing for your procedure in determining how safe and effective your skin treatment results will be.

Here are some aftercare tips to help you make the most out of your laser hair removal treatment:

  • Cold Compress: Depending on your skin type, you may experience some redness and bumping of the skin for 1-2 days after the treatment. Apply a cold compress to the area to minimize any irritation.
  • Avoid the sun: You should avoid spending too much time in the sun after your laser hair removal treatment. If you do go outside, make sure to use sunblock lotion of a SPF 25 or higher.
  • Don’t irritate the treated area: Avoid irritating the treated area by scratching or picking at it as this could affect your results & healing time.
  • Bathing & showering: During your course of laser hair removal treatments, make sure to use mild soap and avoid scrubbing yourself too hard

I recently had liposuction done by Dr. Peterson to fix Coolsculpt I had had done that left me uneven. He was very professional, caring and compassionate and assured me everything could be fixed. I can't express my gratitude to Dr. Peterson for what an amazing job he did and how well he took care of me. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a plastic surgeon, in fact I have recommended him to many friends and they have all been very happy. My experience at the clinic was amazing, right from the beginning talking with Cynthia and the amazing care I got from all the nurses, I felt very special.
