Why Consider Ear Surgery?

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty or ear reshaping, is a common plastic surgery procedure used to alter the size, position or proportion of the ears. The outcome of the procedure varies greatly depending on your aesthetic goals, but this procedure is generally used to make ears less prominent, smaller, symmetrical and evenly positioned and is popular for children and teenagers. Otoplasty can be used to correct a variety of aesthetic issues. Asymmetrical ears can be repositioned to achieve symmetry, while large or prominent ears can be pinned back or reshaped. Ears that are misshapen, due to injury or a birth defect, can also be reshaped and repositioned as necessary. Otoplasty is able to address both multiple ear issues and singular ear issues depending on your aesthetic goals.

When to consider otoplasty

You might consider otoplasty if:

  • Your ears are disproportionate to your head
  • Your ears are oddly placed
  • You were born with overly large or overly small ears
  • Your ears stick out prominently
  • You have suffered an injury or birth defect that has negatively impacted the shape and/or positioning of your ears

Otoplasty can be used to improve the shape and proportion of your ears, improving your self confidence and self esteem. This procedure is also low risk, and can be performed on children over the age of 5. The results will last a lifetime and you will experience minimal fluctuations even if you are still growing. However, young children may have difficulty dealing with the recovery and after care processes. The symmetry of your ears may be affected, and in rare cases permanent scarring or numbness of the ear or face can occur. Before undergoing any plastic surgery treatment you should consult with your doctor and your plastic surgeon.

Am I a good candidate for otoplasty?

In order for otoplasty to be successful your ears must have reached their full size, which usually happens around the age of 6. Children are the most common patients for this procedure, though both adults and children can undergo this procedure. A set-back otoplasty, which is used to reduce the prominence of ears that stick out too much, is common among both adults and children. As with any form of plastic surgery you should be in good general health and have a positive attitude and realistic expectations. Speak to your plastic surgeon about your aesthetic goals so that he or she can help you determine the best course of action and advise you on the types of results you can expect to see if you elect to undergo the procedure.
