What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is a cosmetic procedure that helps individuals stylize the look of their upper and lower eyelids. The surgery is intended to provide a revitalized appearance to the area surrounding your eyes.

When looking at another person, we almost always are making eye contact with them. Since it is the most commonly looked at portion of the body, it makes sense that we want to ensure that it is pleasant looking. This is a likely reason why the surgery is so incredibly popular! Before choosing to get eyelid surgery for yourself, you should make sure you know all the facts. Here are 7 things to know about eyelid surgery.

1. Eyelid Surgery is Anti-Aging

As we age, our skin tends to lose its elasticity, leading to drooping and saggy parts of our body. While not the first place you think of for this to happen, both our upper and lower eyelids may begin to sag over time. Eyelid surgery is an effective option to limit this process and restore some youthfulness to your face.

2. Don’t Worry, You’ll Still Look Like You

One of the main concerns many patients have when it comes to nearly any cosmetic procedure is that they are worried they will not look like themselves after the operation. For nearly all cosmetic operations, this is not the case. As for blepharoplasties, the surgery will not change the structure of your eyes or facial complexion, meaning that you will still look like yourself, albeit with a younger, more rejuvenated look.

3. Blepharoplasties Can Be For Nearly Anyone

While the procedure is most common for men and women who are noticing signs of aging around their eyes and eyelids, the procedure is not restricted to these groups. There is no set age a candidate must be to have the procedure done, as long as they have turned 18. However, there are some criteria that may restrict you from the procedure, such as:

  • Smoking or using other nicotine products
  • You suffer from bleeding or clotting disorders
  • Must not be pregnant
  • In poor physical or mental health

If none of these criteria apply to you, then eyelid surgery might be something worth considering.

4. Results are Long-Lasting

If you take good care of your body, face, and eyes, the results of your eyelid surgery can last you for the rest of your life. By avoiding things that will shorten the lifespan of your procedure, such as intense sunlight, smoking, and overwhelming stress, you will be able to keep your astonishing look for a very long time!

5. There Are Non-Permanent Options

If the thought of altering your face for a considerable amount of time worries you, eyelid surgery may not be for you. However, there are many other alternatives that can help improve the aesthetics of your eyes and eyelids. Botox injections, tissue fillers, and other non-surgical skin treatments are excellent, effective, and often temporary ways that you can achieve the look you are after! Contact our Kelowna Plastic Surgeon to learn more about our non-permanent facial solutions.

6. There is a Recovery Time

While the specific recovery time will vary depending on the specifics of your procedure, there are some consistent factors that you should be aware of. Typically, recovery will take a few weeks before you can return to your normal activities. However, the full results of your surgery may not come to fruition for many months after. It is essential to go into your recovery with adequate expectations and are ready to take time to rest, relax, and listen to your surgeon’s advice.

7. Be Sure To Understand The Risks

As with any surgical procedure, there are going to be risks involved. When performed by a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Brian Peterson, the surgery is typically incredibly safe. However, there are some concerns that even the best plastic surgeons in the world can only do so much to mitigate. The risk of swelling, bruising, and infections are ever-present, albeit small when electing to go with a highly skilled professional plastic surgeon.
