Dermabrasion is the cosmetic surgery that resurfaces the skin’s top layers through a method of controlled surgical removal. The treatments soften the deep animation lines, giving the skin a smoother and refreshed appearance. Dermabrasion can be used alone, or in conjunction with other face rejuvenation procedures such a facelift.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS, RISKS AND RECOVERY
Dermabrasion is safe when performed by a qualified, experience board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr Brian D. Peterson. The common risk is a change in the skin pigmentation. Some patients find the treated skin remains a little lighter in appearance.
PROCEDURE:
Dermabrasion skin treatment procedure may be performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the area, combined with a sedative to make you drowsy. You will be awake but relaxed, and will feel minimal discomfort. In more severe cases, Dr. Peterson may prefer to use general anesthesia, in which case you will sleep through the procedure.
RECOVERY:
Once surgery is completed, your skin will be fairly red, along with some burning or tingling, and you may have difficulty eating and speaking. Any pain you feel can be controlled with medications prescribed by Dr. Peterson. The swelling will begin to subside within a few days to a week. If you have a history of cold sores, you will be prescribed medication to help prevent an outbreak. Dr. Peterson will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your skin after surgery. Your new skin will be a bit swollen, sensitive, and pink for several weeks. During this time, you can gradually begin to resume your normal activities. Above all, it is important to protect your skin from the sun until the pigment has completely returned to your skin which can take up to six months.
