What is Involved in a Permanent Makeup Treatment?

Permanent makeup is a revolutionary method of applying natural pigments into the dermal layer of the skin. This state-of-the-art technique is medically proven and specifically designed to be completely safe.

How is it done?

The process of this skin treatment is just like getting a tattoo. The specialist applying the permanent makeup uses a needle which penetrates your skin and releases the pigment.

Is it painful?

While the level of pain experienced does vary according to each individual, a topical anaesthetic is used to numb the treatment area to minimize any discomfort.

How long do the results last?

Like any tattoo, permanent makeup will fade over time. Most last for approximately 3-5 years before a touch is required to maintain your desired look. At this time, you can even choose to change the colours of your permanent makeup.

Pre and Post Treatment Care For a Permanent Makeup Procedure

Permanent makeup is a safe and effective procedure. However, to minimize any treatment risks and ensure the most satisfactory results, it’s important that you follow all your skin specialist’s pre and post-treatment care instructions.

Pre-treatment Care

It is recommended to let your skin breathe as much as possible for at least 30 days prior to your skin treatment.

Pre-Treatment Care Instructions:

  1. Ensure the treatment area is free of all irritations including ingrown hairs, eczema, psoriasis and blemishes
  2. Not use any anti-acne or anti-aging products on the skin for at least 30 days prior to the treatment
  3. Not take alcohol or caffeine 24 hours before application
  4. Not exercise 24 hours before application
  5. Not intentionally tan 4 weeks prior to the skin treatment (if you get a sunburn, allow at least a month for it to heal)
  6. Avoid any blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen, Niacin etc.) for 1 week before application
  7. Avoid Botox for a minimum of 3 weeks prior to your application and 3 weeks after
  8. Not undergo chemical peels, microdermabrasion or facials for 4 weeks prior to application
  9. Not use Accutane for 1 year prior to skin treatment
  10. Avoid antibiotic use for at least 1 month before your appointment

Post-Treatment Care

The healing time for any permanent makeup treatment is typically 7-10 days.

Post-Treatment Care Guidelines:

  1. Let any scabbing or dry skin naturally exfoliate off. Picking can cause scarring.
  2. DO NOT rub, pick or scratch the area.
  3. Absolutely no makeup, skincare products or sunscreen on the treated area for at least 14 days.
  4. Avoid direct sun exposure for 4 weeks after your skin treatment.
  5. No excessive sweating (from work or exercise) for at least the 7-10 day healing period.
  6. Avoid sleeping on your face for the first two weeks to protect the area.
  7. Avoid washing your face directly for at least 14 days.
  8. NO Botox for at least 3 weeks after your treatment.

REMEMBER: Swelling is normal for all permanent makeup procedures. Apply an ice pack to reduce any discomfort. Also, you may experience temporary dry skin, itching and tenderness in the treatment area.

I recently had liposuction done by Dr. Peterson to fix Coolsculpt I had had done that left me uneven. He was very professional, caring and compassionate and assured me everything could be fixed. I can't express my gratitude to Dr. Peterson for what an amazing job he did and how well he took care of me. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a plastic surgeon, in fact I have recommended him to many friends and they have all been very happy. My experience at the clinic was amazing, right from the beginning talking with Cynthia and the amazing care I got from all the nurses, I felt very special.
