Are you wondering whether a breast lift (mastopexy) is the right cosmetic breast surgery for you? Here’s your complete guide to this procedure and what to expect during the recovery period.
A mastopexy, commonly referred to as a breast lift, is a cosmetic surgery designed to make the breasts appear tighter and more youthful by gently lifting the breast tissue. You may experience sagging due to age, pregnancy, weight loss, and other factors, and in such cases, a mastopexy might be the ideal solution.
Candidates for a breast mastopexy include those who:
- Have a certain amount of natural breast elasticity remaining
- Are non-smokers
- Are in good general health
- Have clear aesthetic priorities and a positive mindset
- Hold realistic expectations of the outcome of this procedure

Your Total Guide to a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
When deciding which cosmetic breast surgery, including a breast augmentation or mastopexy, is right for you, there are many factors that need to be taken into account. This includes your anatomy, current breast size and positioning, and your aesthetic goals and desires.
All of these are very important issues that are best discussed during a consultation with your trusted, board-certified plastic surgeon. Once it has been determined that a mastopexy is right for you, here’s what you can expect from the procedure:
Day of Surgery: What to Expect
Depending on the extent of your procedure, a breast lift should take approximately two hours and following the procedure, you will have to take 7-10 days off from work.
You will also need someone to drive you to and from the surgery, and stay with you for at least 24 hours. This is because you will need some help taking care of yourself after the procedure. Remember, your job following the mastopexy is to rest and recover.
Days 1-2 of Recovery
During the first two days of your recovery, you are likely to be sore and have some bruising and swelling. However, your plastic surgeon will prescribe some pain medication that can help relieve any discomfort or pain you may be feeling.
Days 3-4 of Recovery
During the next few days of recovery, you will be given a support bra that will replace your bandages and surgical bra. You will have to wear this soft support bra all day, typically for 3-4 weeks following the surgery.
Week 1-4 of Recovery
Typically your stitches will be removed two weeks after your procedure. You can then talk to your plastic surgeon about starting to exercise gently. However, you must avoid high impact workouts for at least six weeks. This includes running and upper body weight training.
6 Weeks Onwards of Recovery
By this time, any loss of feeling you may have experienced in the nipples should start to fade. However, for some patients this can last longer and if you have any concerns, you should contact your plastic surgeon for advice.
While your scars are very visible at this time, they will start to fade and your surgeon and team can provide tips to help you improve the look of them as they begin to heal.
By the four week mark, most patients are feeling like themselves again and are truly happy with their results. Remember, it is a big deal to embark on a surgical procedure, and you must be patient and gentle with yourself to ensure a good recovery period.
