Top Signs You Have a Plastic Surgery Emergency
After undergoing plastic surgery, it’s very important for patients to follow their post-op instructions closely. This will help prevent complications and any adverse side effects after a cosmetic surgery procedure.
It is also essential that you know what warning signs to look out for after your surgery so that you can contact your plastic surgeon right away in the event of an emergency.
Here are some signs that you might require plastic surgery emergency care:
-
No improvement in pain. For most patients, post-op pain will decrease in the days after the procedure. If you notice that your pain and discomfort are getting worse after surgery, despite the use of pain medication, it could be a sign of an infection or another serious problem.
-
Bruising deepens. You should expect some bruising around the incisions, with normal colour returning within two weeks. However, if your bruising or discolouration begins to spread, it could be a sign of damaged blood vessels or an infection, and you should call your plastic surgeon immediately.
-
Severe swelling. Just like with bruising, swelling is a common side effect of cosmetic surgery and tends to last for 14 days, with gradual improvements from day to day. However, if your incision areas are extremely swollen, this requires immediate medical attention.
-
Fever or heat in the treatment area. If you run a fever after your procedure, or the area around your incisions is excessively warm or hot, this is often a sign of an infection. You should seek emergency care from your plastic surgeon as soon as possible.
-
Excessive bleeding. Some bleeding after a procedure is common, but any excessive bleeding or bleeding that doesn’t stop, should be cause for concern. It could be a sign of a broken suture or other kinds of tissue damage that requires professional attention.
-
General fatigue. Some weakness and grogginess should be expected during the first couple of days after your procedure. However, if this fatigue persists for many days and is accompanied by any of the other above warning signs, then you should get in touch with your surgeon.
