Are you considering cosmetic ear surgery? Here is some information on the ear pinning recovery time and how you can ensure the safest and quickest healing period.
Ear pinning surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery that is designed to alter the size, position, or proportion of the ears. Your plastic surgeon may recommend an otoplasty, such as ear pinning surgery, for several reasons, such as:
- You were born with overly prominent ears
- Your ears are disproportionate to other facial features
- Your ear is misshapen due to injury
- There is a defect in the structure of your ear

Your Total Recovery Guide to Ear Pinning Surgery
An ear surgery is a relatively safe and simple procedure, and in most cases, it is performed on an outpatient basis, which means no overnight stay in the hospital is required. However, this cosmetic procedure does have a significant recovery period, during which it’s critical that you follow your plastic surgeon’s post surgical care instructions.
Immediately After Ear Surgery
Once your procedure is over, your ears will be covered with a dressing, which typically is worn for at least 7 days. Your plastic surgeon may also recommend that you wear a tennis headband for at least 2 months following the surgery and that you avoid any contact sports.
During this recovery time, you should be aware of the following:
- You may have some discomfort following the surgery. While you’re at the hospital, your plastic surgeon may prescribe a mild painkiller such as paracetamol. You must AVOID aspirin at this time.
- Your dressings will be removed after one week. You may see some swelling and bruising but this is only temporary and should resolve within 14 days. At this time, improvements in your ear size and shape will start to become visible.
- Numbness during recovery is normal, but only temporary. The sensation in your ears will gradually return.
- Some patients may experience a mild infection around the stitch line. If this happens, make an appointment immediately with your plastic surgeon and they will help resolve it.
When Will You See The Results Of Your Surgery?
While you may immediately notice some improvement in the shape and position of your ears, it will take up to 8 weeks for them to fully set in and heal. Most patients are able to return to work after the first week of ear surgery, but you must avoid contact sports for at least one month after the procedure.
9 Tips For a Successful Ear Pinning Back Recovery Period
When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, an otoplasty can produce safe and dramatic results which are long lasting. However, taking care of yourself during your recovery period is key for optimal results.
Here are 9 simple tips for an ear pinning back recovery period:
- Don’t bend down or carry heavy items for at least one month
- Don’t blow your nose too hard or play a wind instrument for at least 4 weeks
- Keep the affected ear dry and avoid washing your hair until the external wound has healed
- Avoid swimming until your surgeon says it is safe to do so
- Avoid lying or sleeping on the affected side to avoid discomfort or pain
- Keep your head cool, especially when wearing bandages
- Minimize swelling by keeping your head elevated while you sleep
- Apply any ointment or medicine given to you by your plastic surgeon. This will ensure your scars heal properly and it will minimize their appearance.
- Have patience and realistic expectations of your outcome.
If you experience any complications during your recovery, you must talk to your plastic surgeon immediately. He/she will be able to assess your ears and provide any necessary advice for the safest recovery.
