Are Facial Fillers Right for You?
The development of dermal fillers has done wonders for the world of cosmetic surgery. The ability to plump certain facial features, remove annoying wrinkles and give your face a lift has been incredible for millions of people worldwide. However, just because facial fillers are amazing, that doesn’t mean that they are right for everybody. Here is how you can decide if fillers are suitable for you and how to differentiate between the various kinds.
OUR DERMAL FILLERS CAN RESTORE VIBRANCY TO YOUR SKIN
Fillers vs. Relaxers
Before we decide what dermal filler is right for you, we need to ensure that what you are looking for can be provided by dermal fillers rather than relaxers.
Dermal fillers are a range of substances that are injected slightly beneath the skin to boost volume, smoothen lines and creases, and enhance facial features. The main products that we use at our Kelowna clinic are Juvederm, Perlane, and Restylane. All of these are dermal fillers that have been used by millions of men and women to create a rejuvenated facial appearance at a more affordable cost than surgery.
Wrinkle relaxers are similar to dermal fillers in that they improve the appearance of your face by reducing the impact of wrinkles and face lines. While there are a few products available, the one that dominates the market and that you have likely heard of is botox. Botox works differently than fillers in that rather than injecting to produce more volume and soften wrinkles, Botox is injected to relax the muscles that create wrinkles and signs of aging. Botox does not increase the volume of facial features.
6 TIPS FOR LONG-LASTING RESULTS OF BOTOX AND DERMAL FILLERS
The Types of Fillers
So you have chosen to use dermal fillers for your aesthetic needs, but you aren’t sure how to navigate which filler is right for you. Don’t worry, we will cover the three main ones you need to know about: Perlane, Juvederm, and Restylane.
Similarities
Before we get into what sets each filler apart, we first must go over what similarities they all share. Here are the similarities of these three dermal fillers:
- All are made out of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that diminishes in our bodies over time
- Each filler consists of particles, albeit at different sizes per product
- All are administered by injection
- All fillers have a mild downtime of about 1-2 days after injection
- Results from these fillers can last between six months to one year
- All of these fillers can limit your wrinkles and improve the volume of certain facial features
Perlane
Of the three fillers listed, Perlane has the largest particle size in the injected substance. This means that Perlane is designed for use on more well defined facial lines. Additionally, due to the larger particle size, Perlane must be injected deeper into the skin than its competitors.
Juvederm
The particle size, also known as the G prime, of Juvederm, is very small. This means that it is intended for use on smaller wrinkles and lines, as well as in areas where the skin is more delicate such as around the eyes. While Juvederm can be used for many other areas of the face, the most prominent place of usage is around the eyes and forehead.
Restylane
Restylane and Juvederm are incredibly similar in their formulae, G prime, and usage areas. Both have low G prime levels, meaning that they are made up of small particles and can therefore be injected in delicate areas. While both can be used in areas such as the eyes, lips, nose, and cheeks, most cosmetic surgeons will use Restylane for the lips, nose, and cheeks, leaving the eyes and forehead for Juvederm.

FAQs
Q: What is the best dermal filler?
There is no one answer to this question, and it truly depends on your needs and your doctor's recommendation.
Q: Will fillers make you age faster?
If you use dermal fillers safely, responsibly, and they are administered by a board-certified plastic surgeon, it is doubtful that fillers will adversely impact your aesthetic aging. However, if dermal fillers are overused and abused, they can cause long-term harm to your face. It is important to always talk to your surgeon about all of the effects of fillers and how you can use them responsibly.
Q: How old should you be to get dermal injections?
To get dermal fillers, you first need to be a legal adult. After that, there are no restrictions on what age you need to be to get dermal injections. Most individuals start getting dermal injections between the ages of 30-50.
