One of the key factors in the success of any cosmetic procedure, be it breast augmentation or liposuction, is the patient’s ability to fully recover afterwards.
Following your plastic surgeon’s instructions regarding surgical aftercare is extremely important because it will:
- Result in a quicker healing process
- Lower the risk of surgical complications
- Help you stay more comfortable and pain-free during the recovery period
- Ensure safer and more satisfactory results

Your Guide to Physical Activity After a Breast Augmentation Procedure
When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, a breast augmentation will give you incredible aesthetic results, but in order for you to enjoy them fully, you must give your body time to heal and return to normal.
During this recovery period, you must be very careful when it comes to exercising in order to minimize any complications, swelling, infections, or stretch marks.
2-3 Weeks Following Your Breast Augmentation
Most plastic surgeons recommend that you take complete rest for at least 2-3 weeks following your breast augmentation procedure. While some light walking is recommended to promote blood flow and healing, you MUST AVOID heavy lifting or intense cardio activities.
Since the majority of implants are placed beneath the pectoralis major muscle, you must give it time to heal before any stress is placed on it.
For at least one month after your surgery, you must not:
- Lift anything heavier than 10 pounds
- Do any weight training
- Do push-ups, pull-ups, pilates, or certain yoga poses
- Do any sports that involve swinging (eg. tennis or golf)
- Pull, push, or carry heavy objects such as large purses
Any strenuous activity must be avoided after your procedure. This is because heightened blood pressure and increased sweating can contribute to the swelling of blood tissues and affect your healing process.
Exercises You May Be Able to Do During Your Recovery
It’s important to remember that before you engage in any physical activity following a breast augmentation, you MUST discuss it with your plastic surgeon first. However, typically, there are some exercises that are allowed during the first 4 weeks after your surgery, including:
- Lunges or squats without weights
- Light to moderate cardio, such as walking on the treadmill or using a stationary bike
- Core specific strengthening exercises (only if they’re done very carefully)
Remember: By consulting with your plastic surgeon first before engaging in any physical activity, you will ensure that you avoid any unwanted risks from your procedure.
One Month Post-Operation Visit
You must schedule a post-op visit with your plastic surgeon one month after your breast augmentation. Your plastic surgeon can review your recovery progress and if you are healing as expected, you may begin to slowly to arm or chest exercises.
In time you will regain total strength of your pectoral muscles and you’ll be able to resume your regular exercise regimen.
