What Makes Them Similar?
The first and foremost obvious similarity is that they are both products designed for non-surgical facial injections designed to add volume and smooth out facial wrinkles and folds.
Chemically, Perlane and Juvederm are quite similar, with both of them being made out of hyaluronic acid (HA). Similar to collagen, hyaluronic acid is a natural element found in the body that, over time, will diminish with age. Hyaluronic acid-based product injections are designed to replace the loss of naturally occurring collagen and hyaluronic acid so your face can remain smooth, tight, and full of volume.
As with all facial injections, the possible side effects of each of these products can include mild swelling and redness, which typically subsides after a couple of days.
What Sets Them Apart?
There are many aspects that set these two products apart, and it is important to understand these so that you and your doctor can make the right choice for your needs.
Structure and Treatment Area
While they may be chemically similar, they are structurally different from one another. Most fillers are classified by the level that they hold their shape, also known as their 'G prime'. The larger the G prime of a product, the larger the particles are, and the stronger the product will hold its shape. With larger particles comes the need to place the injection deeper in the skin, meaning that products with a higher G prime are less suited for areas with thin, delicate skin.
- Perlane has a higher G prime, meaning that it is filled with larger particles, and is, therefore, the better fit for areas of the face that require the most lift. Perlane is not well-suited for areas of the face with thin, delicate skin due to the need for the injected particles to be deeper in the skin.
- Juvederm has a lower G prime level, meaning that the smaller particles make it best suited for procedures where a smooth result is desired. Areas of the face with more fragile skin, such as the eyes and lips, are where Juvederm is likely the preferred product.
Cost and Value
Since both products are similar in their contents, they are quite similar in cost. However, since Perlane provides slightly more product on a per syringe basis, it often provides a better value if you are concerned about the cost of your procedure.
When weighing in the length of time of the results, it seems that Juvederm may be the better value. While both products typically last between 3-6 months, Juvederm has shown to generally last for a slightly longer period of time than Perlane.
The Final Verdict
When it comes down to it, both Juvederm and Perlane are excellent non-invasive dermal fillers that will give you younger-looking skin and facial appearance. It is always important to talk to your plastic surgeon about the best treatment options for your needs. During your pre-procedure consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your interests and worries to determine what the best option, or combination of options, is right for you to help achieve the best possible results.
