Juvederm or Perlane? Comparing the top dermal fillers

Have you decided that you need a facial rejuvenation? Trying to compare the top, non-surgical methods? Two of the top dermal fillers, Juvederm or Perlane, might be the right choice for you! Here is how you can decide which one is the best option.

Our team of board-certified plastic surgeons can provide a wide range of surgical and non-surgical facial cosmetic treatments to help you reach all of your aesthetic goals at our private hospital located in Kelowna

Two of our non-surgical facial revitalizing products, Juvederm and Perlane, are becoming increasingly popular with our patients. These products can help you achieve fantastic results without the hassle of recovery periods associated with invasive surgical procedures such as facelifts, neck lifts, chin lifts, and other procedures.

Dermal filler injections are a non-invasive cosmetic treatment that can be used to:

  • Volumize facial features
  • Create plump, full lips
  • Reduce wrinkles, crow's feet, and other signs of aging
  • Create more vibrant, healthy-looking skin

Dermal filler injections can do all of this at a lower cost, quicker time, and without the pain and risks of surgical procedures.

Juvederm or Perlane: Which Should You Pick?

As innovation in cosmetic injectables has risen, so too has the popularity and number of choices available. With so many options to choose from, you may begin to feel overwhelmed by choice and information. We are here to help by showing you the similarities and differences between two of the top products available, Juvederm and Perlane.

Unsure if injectable dermal fillers are right for you? Check out some of our other non-surgical options:

What Makes Them Similar?

The first and foremost obvious similarity is that they are both products designed for non-surgical facial injections designed to add volume and smooth out facial wrinkles and folds.

Chemically, Perlane and Juvederm are quite similar, with both of them being made out of hyaluronic acid (HA). Similar to collagen, hyaluronic acid is a natural element found in the body that, over time, will diminish with age. Hyaluronic acid-based product injections are designed to replace the loss of naturally occurring collagen and hyaluronic acid so your face can remain smooth, tight, and full of volume.

As with all facial injections, the possible side effects of each of these products can include mild swelling and redness, which typically subsides after a couple of days.

What Sets Them Apart?

There are many aspects that set these two products apart, and it is important to understand these so that you and your doctor can make the right choice for your needs.

Structure and Treatment Area

While they may be chemically similar, they are structurally different from one another. Most fillers are classified by the level that they hold their shape, also known as their 'G prime'. The larger the G prime of a product, the larger the particles are, and the stronger the product will hold its shape. With larger particles comes the need to place the injection deeper in the skin, meaning that products with a higher G prime are less suited for areas with thin, delicate skin.

  • Perlane has a higher G prime, meaning that it is filled with larger particles, and is, therefore, the better fit for areas of the face that require the most lift. Perlane is not well-suited for areas of the face with thin, delicate skin due to the need for the injected particles to be deeper in the skin.
  • Juvederm has a lower G prime level, meaning that the smaller particles make it best suited for procedures where a smooth result is desired. Areas of the face with more fragile skin, such as the eyes and lips, are where Juvederm is likely the preferred product.

Cost and Value

Since both products are similar in their contents, they are quite similar in cost. However, since Perlane provides slightly more product on a per syringe basis, it often provides a better value if you are concerned about the cost of your procedure.

When weighing in the length of time of the results, it seems that Juvederm may be the better value. While both products typically last between 3-6 months, Juvederm has shown to generally last for a slightly longer period of time than Perlane.

The Final Verdict

When it comes down to it, both Juvederm and Perlane are excellent non-invasive dermal fillers that will give you younger-looking skin and facial appearance. It is always important to talk to your plastic surgeon about the best treatment options for your needs. During your pre-procedure consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your interests and worries to determine what the best option, or combination of options, is right for you to help achieve the best possible results.

I recently had liposuction done by Dr. Peterson to fix Coolsculpt I had had done that left me uneven. He was very professional, caring and compassionate and assured me everything could be fixed. I can't express my gratitude to Dr. Peterson for what an amazing job he did and how well he took care of me. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a plastic surgeon, in fact I have recommended him to many friends and they have all been very happy. My experience at the clinic was amazing, right from the beginning talking with Cynthia and the amazing care I got from all the nurses, I felt very special.
