Liposuction: How Does It Work?

kelowna liposuction

Do you have stubborn pockets of fat that remain despite the fact that you are at a healthy weight? Have you dieted and exercised diligently but have areas that stubbornly refuse to slim?

As we age, we have a tendency to put on weight, and our tendency to accumulate fat in certain areas can result in:

  • a wider waistline
  • saddle bags or extra weight on the inner thighs
  • a less refined profile due to excess fat under the jaw

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that reduces localized pockets of fat. Liposuction can be used on almost any area of the body, including the:

  • midsection/waist
  • thighs
  • ankles
  • calves
  • arms
  • neck/chin

How Does This Procedure Work?

While it only requires small incisions, liposuction is still a surgical procedure, some form of anaesthetic will be used.

This includes:

  • local anaesthetic
  • IV sedation
  • general anaesthesia

Next, an incision is created in the skin. The surgeon will use a cannula (a hollow tube) to loosen excess fat. The fat is then suctioned out using a surgical vacuum or a syringe attached to the cannula.

Frequently Asked Questions About Liposuction

Can liposuction treat cellulite or sagging skin?

Liposuction, unfortunately, cannot treat cellulite or loose, flabby skin. Depending on the target area, patients seeking to remedy loose skin can opt for a thigh lift, tummy tuck, arm lift, or neck lift.

Can liposuction help me lose weight?

While liposuction can refine the body’s contours, it is not a substitute for diet and exercise. Instead, it is used as a sculpting method to treat areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is advised by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons that patients be within 30% of their adult weight for best results.

Will My Skin Sag After Liposuction?

The degree of skin sagging that occurs after liposuction depends on the patient’s skin elasticity and firmness, as well as how much fat is removed. Most patients do not experience sagging, but some older patients with less elastic skin do, just as they would experience sagging after dieting.

If skin sagging is a concern, this should be discussed with a plastic surgeon.

Will Liposuction Leave A Scar?

Liposuction requires only very small incisions, as most cases only require the use of a micro-cannula. Even when scarring from liposuction is visible, the scars are usually so small and strategically place that they are unlikely to be noticed

However, some patients might be susceptible to scarring:

  • Liposuction scars can be more visible if the patient has a tendency to scar.
  • Some patients experience hyperpigmentation in the area if they are prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

I recently had liposuction done by Dr. Peterson to fix Coolsculpt I had had done that left me uneven. He was very professional, caring and compassionate and assured me everything could be fixed. I can't express my gratitude to Dr. Peterson for what an amazing job he did and how well he took care of me. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a plastic surgeon, in fact I have recommended him to many friends and they have all been very happy. My experience at the clinic was amazing, right from the beginning talking with Cynthia and the amazing care I got from all the nurses, I felt very special.
