Our Favourite Summer Skin Pick-Me-Ups
While you should take precautions to protect your skin all year long, it’s of particular concern during the summer because the sun is stronger, there are more hours of sunlight each day and people tend to expose more skin to stay comfortable in the heat.
Some of the advanced cosmetic skin treatments that can help keep your appearance healthy and glowing this warm season include:
Microdermabrasion
With summer fast approaching, most patients are looking for a safe, yet effective, facial treatment that delivers dramatic results almost instantly.
Microdermabrasion is a minimally-invasive skin treatment that works to gently exfoliate the top layer of your skin, stimulating collagen production and encouraging the growth of new, healthy cells to give you a long-lasting glow.
Microdermabrasion can be used to address skin concerns including:
- Acne
- Fine lines & wrinkles
- Uneven skin tone & dull complexion
- Skin pigmentation
- Black and whiteheads
Duration
Approximately 30 minutes, depending on treatment area and size.
Side-Effects
Microdermabrasion is a very gentle skin treatment, however patients may experience temporary skin redness and a sunburned feeling, but these sensations should subside fairly quickly.
When Can I Expect to See Results?
During microdermabrasion recovery, patients generally experience immediate improvements but optimal results will only be visible once patient has completed all the recommended treatments.
Chemical Peels
A chemical peel is an advanced skin care treatment which uses a chemical solution (such as glycolic acid) to gently exfoliate the outer layers of dead skin, revealing a new skin layer with improved tone, texture and color.
Depending on whether you opt for a superficial, medium or deep chemical peel, this cosmetic treatment can address concerns including:
- Mild discoloration or skin pigmentation
- Chronic dry skin
- Age spots, fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scars
- Some precancerous growths (e.g. actinic keratosis)
Duration
One chemical peel treatment typically takes 45 minutes.
Side-Effects
The side-effects of the chemical peel will depend on the severity of your skin treatment.
Superficial chemical peel: Temporary mild redness and flakiness
Medium chemical peel: Redness and swelling at treatment site. You will need to avoid the sun for a week and take some antiviral medication.
Deep chemical peel: Redness and swelling. Your face will be bandaged after the treatment. Anti-viral medication and a daily ointment will be recommended.
When Can I Expect to See Results?
Again, healing times will vary depending on the chemical peel.
Superficial: 1-7 days
Medium: 7-14 days
Deep: 14-21 days
Blu-U with Levulan For Acne Treatment
Summer can be tough on your skin, especially if you suffer from acne. Heat tends to aggravate acne, causing inflammation and more frequent breakouts. The good news? There is a wide range of effective and safe acne treatments that can help keep your skin healthy and acne-free all summer long.
The Blu-U is a unique acne treatment which uses blue light to kill the P. acnes bacteria on your skin. For more severe cases, this skin treatment can be paired with Levulan, an aminolevulinic acid, which makes the skin more responsive to the action of the Blu-U light.
On average, it takes approximately 6-8 weeks before the results are noticeable. In this time, you can take action to lessen your acne symptoms and complement the acne treatment by:
- Using a gentle facial cleanser (recommended by your skin care specialist) twice a day
- Refraining from picking blackheads and whiteheads
- Using non-comedogenic cosmetics (indicated on the labels)
- Considering skin treatments such as chemical peels, laser resurfacing or microdermabrasion to deal with acne scarring
