What Does "Board Certified Surgeon" Mean?

If you’ve been shopping around for a cosmetic procedure, you’ve likely heard the term “board-certified’. But what does it mean? In this post, we’ll provide an overview of this surgical procedure and explain why it’s essential that you choose one.

What Does It Mean When A Plastic Surgeon Is Board Certified?

After a residency, doctors, and surgeons can become licensed to practice medicine. However, they can also become board-certified, in order to go above and beyond the minimal standards.

When a surgeon or doctor is board certified, it means that they have demonstrated a mastery of knowledge and skills in a certain specialization. Their certification may be done through a combination of practical and written tests and examinations.

Many boards require ongoing study and re-certification, which can ensure that the medical professional is staying up-to-date, even in the most rapidly-changing fields.

Key Boards, Certifications, And Memberships

LMCC - Licentiate Of the Medical Council of Canada

The LMCC is part of the Canadian standard, which is a set of qualifications that allow an individual to become licensed to practice medicine. Along with a medical degree; appropriate time in a postgraduate training program, and certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons or the College of Family Physicians, the LMCC qualifies a doctor to be fully licensed in Canada.

College of Physicians And Surgeons of British Columbia

The College of physicians and surgeons in BC regulates the practice of medicine in the province: all physicians practicing medicine in the province must register.

Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada

Royal College Fellowship is the national standard for specialist medical expertise. Because medicine keeps evolving, Royal College Fellows are always enhancing their learning and skills. The RCPSC covers 80 specialties.

American Board of Plastic Surgeons

The ABPS issues certificates to plastic surgeons who successfully pass an exam covering the breadth of the field of plastic surgery, and who meet high standards in training requirement.

Fellow Of American College of Surgeons

A fellow of the American college of surgeons has passed a rigorous evaluation of their training, qualifications, surgical conduct, and ethical conduct.

Canadian Society Of Plastic Surgery

Membership in the CSPS is open to specialists in plastic surgery who have been certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American Board of Plastic Surgery, or the College Des Medecins du Quebec.

Finding The Right Plastic Surgeon

In addition to board certification, there are other qualities you should look for in any surgeon you are considering working with.

These include:

  • experience in the type of procedure you are considering
  • before-and-after photos of similar cases
  • a willingness to go over all options and potential risk factors
  • an understanding demeanor

I recently had liposuction done by Dr. Peterson to fix Coolsculpt I had had done that left me uneven. He was very professional, caring and compassionate and assured me everything could be fixed. I can't express my gratitude to Dr. Peterson for what an amazing job he did and how well he took care of me. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a plastic surgeon, in fact I have recommended him to many friends and they have all been very happy. My experience at the clinic was amazing, right from the beginning talking with Cynthia and the amazing care I got from all the nurses, I felt very special.
