What You Need to Know About Mommy Makeovers

Looking to rejuvenate your appearance after a pregnancy? A Mommy Makeover includes a number of transformative plastic surgeries, including a breast lift & abdominoplasty, to help restore your body contours.

A ‘mommy makeover’ is a combination of cosmetic plastic surgeries designed to restore the look of a woman’s body to what she had before pregnancy. The procedures which are normally combined include a(n):

  • Abdominoplasty
  • Liposuction
  • Body reshaping procedure
  • Depending on the size of the breasts, a mommy makeover can include a breast reduction, breast lift or a breast augmentation
  • Some patients also incorporate a face procedure

When performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, a Mommy Makeover can help you reclaim your body by safely and effectively targeting the areas of your body where you need and want the most help.

Procedure Options

What is Involved in a Mommy Makeover?

One of the biggest advantages to this combination plastic surgery procedure is that it can be customized to meet all your specific aesthetic needs. Most patients tend to concentrate on three areas: breasts, abdomen and hips.

The top 3 procedures included in a Mommy Makeover include:

BREAST LIFT

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a plastic surgery designed to raise the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.

During a Mommy Makeover, the breast lift can be performed with or without augmentation, depending on your specific needs.

ABDOMINOPLASTY

A pregnancy can cause the muscles of your abdomen to stretch and separate, leaving you with extra soft tissue around your middle and stretch marks.

Plastic surgeons often recommend including an abdominoplasty in a Mommy Makeover as it can remove loose/excess skin and fat, as well as tighten the muscles in the abdominal wall, for a more pleasing body shape.

LIPOSUCTION

During pregnancy, your body accumulates and retains fat deposits, which can become very difficult to get rid of later on, even with diligent exercise and a healthy diet.

For this reason, many plastic surgeons will recommend liposuction - a plastic surgery that is designed to reshape specific areas of the body by removing stubborn fat deposits - as part of the Mommy Makeover.

Who is a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is an innovative plastic surgery procedure which can effectively address the lingering after-effects of giving birth.

Some of the signs that you may be a candidate for this procedure include:

  • Being a non-smoker
  • Having good health
  • You have worked at losing the weight and only have stubborn skin and fat, as well as distended breasts, which cannot be fixed with diet and exercise
  • You don’t plan on having any more children
  • You gave birth at least 6 months ago
  • You stopped breastfeeding at least 6 months ago

Before undergoing any procedure, it is best to book a consultation with your plastic surgeon as they will be able to examine your aesthetic goals, lifestyle and medical history to best determine whether a Mommy Makeover is the right option for you.

Recovering from a Mommy Makeover

You should expect to have some bruising and swelling after this plastic surgery procedure, the majority of which will subside within 3 weeks. However, complete resolution can take up to 6 months to occur.

CHILDREN/HOUSEHOLD
  • Plan to have a friend or family member take care of young children for the first 2-3 weeks. This is especially important for infants, as you should avoid lifting them for this time period.
  • You CAN hold your child in your lap but you SHOULD NOT lift them into the position
  • Consider hiring a babysitter/nanny or a family member for this period to ensure you get adequate rest.
  • Do not vacuum or do laundry for the first 4-6 weeks
  • Avoid reaching above shoulder level. Make sure to work only with your hands - not your shoulders.
WORK
  • For a SEDENTARY JOB (i.e. computer work,) most patients can return to the office in 14 days. Be sure to arrange your work station so you limit shoulder and abdomen motion.
  • For a STRENUOUS JOB, most patients require at least 4-6 weeks to return to their normal activities.

I recently had liposuction done by Dr. Peterson to fix Coolsculpt I had had done that left me uneven. He was very professional, caring and compassionate and assured me everything could be fixed. I can't express my gratitude to Dr. Peterson for what an amazing job he did and how well he took care of me. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a plastic surgeon, in fact I have recommended him to many friends and they have all been very happy. My experience at the clinic was amazing, right from the beginning talking with Cynthia and the amazing care I got from all the nurses, I felt very special.
