People undergo plastic surgery for a variety of reasons, and they seem to be doing more of it. According to a survey conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery more than 11 million surgeries took place in 2013. So why are people doing it? It comes down to a variety of factors:
Some people want to impress others
Though a few patients elect to undergo plastic surgery to impress others, it isn’t usually to impress their spouses. One of the trends in recent years is to impress potential employers, who tend to favour younger looking candidates over older ones. Though some individuals are turning to plastic surgery to give themselves a potential edge over other job seekers, the majority of women who undergo plastic surgery are not choosing to for this reason.
More disposable income
One fairly self explanatory reason: the economy is on the mend, and more people have more disposable income than they did during the Great Recession. This means that women who wanted to undergo plastic surgery during the recession, but couldn’t afford to, are now more likely to undergo plastic surgery now that they have the disposable income to pay for it. This may have artificially boosted the numbers for 2014 because women who would have undergone the procedure earlier had to hold off because of financial constraints.
Because they want to
The majority of women who undergo plastic surgery do so because they want to boost their self esteem. The majority of plastic surgery patients are not young women wanting the perfect body, but instead tend to be women aged 35 to 50 who are looking to counteract the negative effects of aging. They are not trying to look like movie stars, they just want to look their very best.
