Will Eyelid Surgery Change My Eye Shape?

Will Eyelid Surgery Change My Eye Shape?

Eyelid Surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a fairly common plastic surgery procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty removes excess skin and fatty deposits that can cause the eyelids to be saggy, drooping, or puffy.

There are two main reasons people choose an eyelid lid lift, or blepharoplasty:

  • Cosmetic Facial Rejuvenation
  • Vision Impairment

Loose and sagging skin can make the eyes appear tired, older, and swollen. Some patients even believe excess hooding of their eyelids makes them seem angry, sad, or unfriendly. And excess hooding can also impair vision and limit field of sight. An eyelid lift can help restore a more youthful, alert look to the eye area, but many patients wonder… “Will eyelid surgery change my eye shape?”

The Blepharoplasty Procedure

Eyelid surgery is a day surgery and can be performed under local anaesthetic and IV sedation or under general anaesthesia. For upper lid blepharoplasty, your plastic surgeon will make precise, small incisions in the natural crease of your eyelid so scarring is concealed. For lower lid blepharoplasty, the incision could be made along your lower lash line or inside the lower lid. After removing excess tissue (skin and fat deposits), your surgeon will close your incisions with precise sutures. After surgery, your eyelids may be bruised and swollen for up to three weeks, and it could be up to three months before the final results of your blepharoplasty are evident.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Blepharoplasty?

Almost anyone, male or female, and of any age (over 18) who is seeking to improve the signs of aging around their eyes or correct impaired vision due to eyelid hooding can be an ideal candidate for blepharoplasty. There are some criteria that may restrict you from having the procedure:

  • Smoking or use of other nicotine products
  • Bleeding or clotting disorders
  • Pregnancy
  • Poor physical or mental health

If any of these applies to you, there are non-surgical options to improve the appearance of your eyes and eyelids such as BOTOX®, tissue fillers, and laser and photorejuvenation treatments. Discuss your options with your plastic surgeon.

So… Will Eyelid Surgery Change The Shape of My Eyes?

Blepharoplasty can dramatically improve the appearance of your eyes, restore symmetry and balance to your face, and improve your field of vision. It can also give you:

  • A rested, more alert, and brighter look
  • A less sunken-in look and reduced hooding of the eyes
  • A more youthful, smoother, age-reducing appearance

So, blepharoplasty can dramatically rejuvenate your face and eyes. It will turn back the years and return your eye appearance to that of a younger you. But eye surgery cannot give you an eye shape that is not natural for you. You will not be able to achieve large, open “doe eyes”, or seductive, alluring almond-shaped eyes if that is not what you were born with. Instead, blepharoplasty is ideal for taking the natural beauty you already possess and refining it so that you can be the best version of yourself.

FAQ

Q: Will I be able to see after eyelid surgery?
A: Your vision may be temporarily blurry immediately after your surgery; however, this is temporary and will improve over a few days as the swelling dissipates.

Q: Is there visible scarring from blepharoplasty?
A: As with any surgery, some scarring can be expected. Your plastic surgeon will strive to conceal incisions within the natural creases of your eyes or inside your lid. If completed by a skilled plastic surgeon, there will be minimal visible scarring that will fade after a few months of recovery.

Q: Will my insurance cover my eyelid surgery?
A: Provincial Government insurance will not cover the cost of your scar revision, but some private insurance plans will. Contact your supplemental insurance provider to find out if your current plan will cover a blepharoplasty.
