Otoplasty (ear surgery) is a cosmetic procedure that is designed to improve the size and/or shape of a patient’s ears, or pin them back if they are protruding. It is the only cosmetic surgery that is performed commonly on both children and adults.

When performed by a trusted and board-certified plastic surgeon, ear surgery is a relatively simple and straightforward procedure that has many benefits, including:

  • Improved appearance
  • Enhanced self-confidence
  • Permanent results
  • Safe treatment

What is an Otoplasty? Am I a Good Candidate for This Procedure?

Otoplasty is often recommended to patients who have misshapen, out-of-proportion or out-of-position ears relative to their face. Ear surgery can return your ear to a more normal shape and fix any congenital defects that are bothersome to a growing child.

Children are good candidates for an otoplasty if:

  • They are over 5 years of age
  • The cartilage of their ear is stable enough to be fixed
  • They are healthy
  • There are no chronic health conditions that could impair healing
  • The child can understand instructions and be responsible during the healing process

Adults are good candidates for an otoplasty if they:

  • Are in good general health, without any pre-existing or chronic health conditions
  • Are non-smokers. Smoking can interfere with the healing process and increase your surgical risks
  • Can identify specific goals for their ear surgery
  • Have realistic expectations of the outcome of this surgery

The Otoplasty Recovery Period: What to Expect

As with all cosmetic surgeries, an otoplasty does require a healing period. While this recovery period is relatively straightforward, it’s always best to follow your plastic surgeon’s after care instructions to ensure the safest and most satisfactory outcome.

Ear Surgery Recovery Timeline

In many cases, you can expect that your otoplasty recovery time will last at least six weeks. However, in just 2-3 weeks, you will begin to notice significant improvements in the appearance of your ears.

Your otoplasty recovery schedule is likely to follow this timeline:

After Surgery - Day 1: You may have localized pain and swelling in and around your ears. Your plastic surgeon will give you a compression garment to keep your ears covered and protected. Make sure you take any prescribed medications, including antibiotics if necessary.

Week 1: You must keep your recovery headband around your ears for the first few days following your surgery. By the third day, you may notice that most of the swelling has gone down. You will also experience less pain and discomfort.

Week 2: Swelling will continue to decrease and at around day 10, most people opt to return to work or school. However, this will vary depending on your job, your specific level of swelling, and other factors.

3 Months: Most of the swelling will have gone down at this time. Continue to follow up with your plastic surgeon to ensure that your recovery is going well.

One Year: Some patients may take a little longer to heal than others, but by the end of the first year, your ears should be completely healed.

Remember: Your recovery timeline will vary based on multiple personal factors. This includes your age, general health, and the exact details of your otoplasty.

I recently had liposuction done by Dr. Peterson to fix Coolsculpt I had had done that left me uneven. He was very professional, caring and compassionate and assured me everything could be fixed. I can't express my gratitude to Dr. Peterson for what an amazing job he did and how well he took care of me. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a plastic surgeon, in fact I have recommended him to many friends and they have all been very happy. My experience at the clinic was amazing, right from the beginning talking with Cynthia and the amazing care I got from all the nurses, I felt very special.
