5 Things You Should Do Before Your Tummy Tuck Procedure

Are you undergoing a tummy tuck procedure? Here’s a comprehensive guide to preparing for your abdominoplasty to ensure the safest and best results.

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a popular surgical body contouring procedure designed to remove excess sagging fat and skin to enhance the shape and tone of your abdominal area. When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, a tummy tuck can:

  • Improve your overall health
  • Give you a more proportional figure
  • Eliminate fat and skin that is resistant to diet and exercise
  • Flatten, tighten, and firm up the abdomen

Preparing For Your Tummy Tuck: A Step By Step Guide

The first step to any tummy tuck procedure is an initial consultation with your plastic surgeon. During this meeting, your doctor will evaluate the status of your health and may want to discuss:

  • Your goals for the surgery
  • Any current medical conditions you have or drug allergies
  • Any previous surgeries you have undergone
  • LIfestyle habits (eg. use of tobacco, alcohol or other drug use)
  • The outcomes of the procedure and any associated surgical risks

What You Need to Do During This Consultation

It’s very important to understand all aspects of your abdominoplasty. To ensure the safest and most satisfactory results, you must be very honest and candid with your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, you should raise them during this appointment.

5 Dos and Don’ts to Preparing For a Tummy Tuck Procedure

An abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure and requires some preparation beforehand to ensure everything goes smoothly. Your surgeon may provide a list of dos and don’ts to be followed as part of your preparation for this treatment and these may include:

5 Dos: What To Do Before Your Tummy Tuck

  1. Create a strong support system: An abdominoplasty requires an extensive period of recovery. You should enlist the help of family and friends who can devote time and effort after the procedure to take care of you.
  1. Maintain communication with your doctor: Prior to your procedure, you should share all relevant health information and lifestyle habits with your cosmetic surgeon. After the procedure, if you experience any abdominal pain or other signs, or have any concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your surgeon.
  1. Stick to a healthy diet. A month before your procedure, start taking a high protein diet. Continue this diet for a few weeks after your surgery under the guidance of a nutritionist. Avoid crash dieting and make sure you aren’t constipated.
  1. Stop taking certain medications. Prior to your procedure, stop taking any SSRIs such as Prozac, Paxil, Luvox or Zoloft. ALWAYS talk to your prescribing doctor before stopping this medication.
  1. Keep a watch on your health. Discuss any signs of illness with your plastic surgeon. This includes colds, infections or boils which appear before your surgery.

5 Don’ts: What Not To Do Before Your Tummy Tuck

  1. Don’t use any form of tobacco. At least a month before your treatment, stop consuming tobacco. Smoking and other forms of tobacco use can lead to poor healing and increase your risk of surgical complications.
  1. Aim for rapid weight loss. If you have been trying to lose weight through crash diets or other means, you should stop a few weeks prior to your abdominoplasty. Maintain a stable and healthy weight for a long as possible before your procedure.
  1. Drink alcohol for at least one week before treatment. Avoid alcohol for at least one week before your surgery and for a couple of weeks afterwards because alcohol can interfere with the anesthesia and affect blood clotting.
  1. Use herbal medication. Avoid herbal medications before your procedure because they could complicate your surgery by interfering with blood clotting and anesthetics and could adversely affect your blood pressure.
  1. Go to the procedure alone. Arrange in advance for someone to take you to and from the procedure. If possible, arrange for help for a few days during your post-op recovery.

I recently had liposuction done by Dr. Peterson to fix Coolsculpt I had had done that left me uneven. He was very professional, caring and compassionate and assured me everything could be fixed. I can't express my gratitude to Dr. Peterson for what an amazing job he did and how well he took care of me. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a plastic surgeon, in fact I have recommended him to many friends and they have all been very happy. My experience at the clinic was amazing, right from the beginning talking with Cynthia and the amazing care I got from all the nurses, I felt very special.
