Am I A Good Candidate For Facelift Surgery?

Am I A Good Candidate For Facelift Surgery?

A facelift, also called a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure performed by a qualified plastic surgeon to restore a youthful appearance to the face. Facelifts work by altering tissues below the skin, repositioning the skin, and removing excess skin to smooth wrinkles and eliminate sagging from the face. This medical procedure is designed to make your face appear more youthful and to make the skin tighter after fully healed from the facelift surgery. While facelifts offer fantastic and natural-looking anti-aging for many people, not everyone is eligible for this procedure. To receive a facelift, you must be a good candidate for this surgery. Your eligibility for a facelift can be assessed when you schedule a consultation with a plastic surgeon. Here are some potential signs that you are a good candidate for facelift surgery.

What Makes Me Eligible For A Facelift?

You Have Good Skin Health
To get ideal results from a facelift, your skin needs to have a certain amount of elasticity and flexibility. When the skin is pinched it still needs to have the ability to “bounce back”. If the skin does not have adequate elasticity, the results of the facelift may not be satisfactory. If your skin is damaged from sun exposure or smoking, you may not be eligible for a facelift.

You Are Generally Healthy
A facelift is an invasive surgical procedure that may use either localized or general anaesthesia. Before you can be approved to receive a facelift, you will need to disclose your medical history and current medications to your plastic surgeon so that all risks can be adequately assessed. If you have any health conditions that may put you at risk of surgical complications or if you are on medication that may influence your surgery or recovery, you may not be eligible for a facelift. Remember that because a facelift is an invasive medical procedure, it will take significant recovery time (typically 4 to 6 weeks for initial recovery but results may not be seen until 3 to 4 months post-surgery) and any health conditions that may influence this recovery time need to be discussed with your plastic surgeon.

You Are Satisfied With Your Bone Structure
A facelift will not change the shape of your face. Facelifts are designed to reduce wrinkles and loose skin, but they will not change the appearance or shape of your bone structure. If you are dissatisfied with aspects of your face shape due to your bone structure, you may want to consider other forms of plastic surgery, such as rhinoplasty or chin augmentation.

You Choose An Age Appropriate Procedure
While you might be wondering what age is the right age for a facelift, there is no one age for this procedure. Patients who receive facelifts are commonly between the ages of 40 and 70. Depending on other factors, such as your skin condition and health, as well as the extent of wrinkle development, you may want to receive a facelift when you are on the younger end of this spectrum, or you may hold out until you are older. Depending on your age and related skin condition, your plastic surgeon may make other facial rejuvenation technique recommendations such as a brow lift or non-surgical treatments such as BOTOX®. A consultation with your plastic surgeon will help you decide what treatment is best for you at what age.

You Have Realistic Expectations
A facelift can help you look younger by tightening the skin and eliminating wrinkles, but facelifts do not drastically change the appearance of your face. Facelifts and other forms of cosmetic facial plastic surgery do not completely alter the look of the face. You may look as though you are ten years younger as the facelift tightens the skin and reduces the look of aging, but overall, facelifts look fairly natural. In fact, plastic surgeons strive for a natural look so that you appear refreshed and younger rather than different.

Q: Will taking care of my facelift make the results permanent?
A: The skin will naturally lose elasticity as a person continues aging and the results of a facelift will not be permanent. The results of your facelift will depend on your age at the time of surgery, how well you protect your skin after the surgery, and how your body ages over time. With proper care, your facelift can last for up to 20 years. Read How To Maintain The Results Of Your Facelift for tips to extend the results of your procedure.

Q: I’m considering getting a facelift but I want to learn more. What resources are there?
A: Peterson offers several informative articles about facelifts to help you learn more. You can also contact Peterson MD with any questions or concerns you may have.
